His death certificate may also be seen in both familysearch.org and ancestry.com, and on that certificate, his date of birth was also given as September 5, 1860, and his age at death was given as 75 years, 10 months, 3 days. The year of birth on his gravestone is 1861. I do not know for certain which year is correct, and for the purposes of this memorial, I am using the year of birth on his gravestone.... I have transcribed the obituary as written. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Daily Courier," Wednesday, July 8, 1936, Page 12: LONG TIME OTTUMWAN DEAD HERE John Milton Maring, 75, died at his home, 622 Norris street, today at 11 a.m. He had been a resident of Ottumwa for the last fifty-two years. Mr. Maring was the son of Jacob and Angeline Maring and was born at Chillicothe, September 5, 1860. He was a charter member of the local Moose lodge. Surviving are his wife, Emma Jane; four sons, Joe of Des Moines, Jacob W. of New York, N.Y., Robert L. of Huntington, W. Va., and John F. of Ottumwa; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Baring of Fairfield and Mrs. Cordelia Peterson of Oskaloosa, and three brothers George Maring of Batavia, Theodore and William of Long Beach, Calif. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting completion of funeral arrangements. --------------- "MARING SERVICES," From "Ottumwa Daily Courier," Thursday, July 9, 1936, Page 12: Funeral services for John Milton Maring, who died at his home, 622 Norris street, Wednesday, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Johnson's funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev.
