August 10, 1936 - Carroll Daily Herald - John Moran, one of Carroll county's leading farmers, died at his home on highway No. 30, east of the city limits, at 9:10 o'clock Saturday night. In March, Mr. Morans health began to fail, but he continued with his farm work until the last of May. Since that time he had made two trips to the Mayo clinic, Rochester, Minn., in an effort to obtain relief but because of the nature of his ailment, a cure could not be effected. He had been confined to bed at his home the greater part of the last two months. The body is at the family home, where it will remain until services are held at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church. Very Rev. P.T. Lynch will read the requiem mass, and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be Vic Schirck, Joe Wiederin, George Simons, Tony Kanne, John Boyce and George O'Donnell. Mr. Moran was a lifelong resident of Carroll county. A son of James and Catherine Moran, prominent pioneers of this county, he was born June 10, 1876, on a farm two miles west of Lidderdale in Sheridan township. He attended the district school near the home place. When he was 16 years old the family moved to the present farm home east of Carroll, and there he has since resided. After their parents passed away, Mr. Moran, with his brother, James Moran and sister, Miss Anna Moran, lived on the same farm. The family group also included a nephew, John Lambert, who had lived with them practically all his life, his mother having died when he was two months old. He passed away May 30, 1934 and his widow (Mrs Arlowine Arts Lambert) and three children have since made their home with the Morans. Mr. Moran was a successful farmer, with good business acumen. He was interested in all measures which were indicative of advancement, and progress. An active member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau, he was director of Grant township for a number of years, serving in this capacity until he became vice president of the county organization, which office he held in 1935. He was also a member of the tax committee in Farm Bureau work. Mr. Moran was vice president of the Carroll County Warehouse Board, having been secretary treasurer last year. He had been a member of the board since it was formed. Mr. Moran belonged to St. Joseph's church of Carroll, and the Holy Name Society of the parish. He was also a member of Charles Carroll Council No. 780, Knights of Columbus. Surviving Mr. Moran are his sister, Miss Anna Moran and brother, James Moran, with whom he made his home, a brother, William Moran, and a half-sister, Miss Mary Lambert of Council Bluffs. A sister, Sister M. Fidelia (Catherine) died in 1905, and a half-brother, Thomas Lambert, passed away August 20, 1915. His father died Feb. 16, 1900, and his mother on May 1, 1923.
