John Bliss was born Feb 22 1771 in Massachusetts, the only child of Daniel Bliss and Isabella (Isabel) Murray; died in Saint John, NB Aug 22, 1834 married his first cousin Aug 7 1797 Sarah Green Upham in Saint John NB, the daughter of Judge Joshua Upham, another member of the New Brunswick Council Children of John & Sarah (two sons and four daughters) In 1819 their son George Pidgeon Bliss married the daughter of Thomas Wetmore, the attorney general of New Brunswick. By the 1820s the Bliss's, Murrays, Uphams, and Wetmores made up an interrelated network of families and the patriarch of the group was John Murray Bliss. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1792. In 1794 he became a judge for nearly 20 years. When young he was known for his hot temper and in 1800 he fought a duel with Samuel Denny Street over a court case, both men escaping unharmed. After his father died, he inherited the family estate in Lincoln NB and built Belmont, said to be the finest house in the colony. In 1798 he had been placed in command of a militia company and in 1808 became a Major, later being involved during the War of 1812. In 1811 he became clerk of the House of Assembly. In 1809 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the assembly, but eventually succeeded and took office in 1814. In 1816 he became an assistant judge of the Supreme Court and was greatly involved with it over the next two decades. In 1834 Bliss died while on a visit to Saint John; he was buried in Fredericton. One of his sons had died before him, and George Pidgeon Bliss died in 1836, so his own family went into decline after his death.
