The son of Lewis and Catherin Bretz, he was born March 29, 1873, in Wayne County, Iowa. At the age of seven, he came to Nebraska with his parents, making the trip in a covered wagon. BRETZ, 81, PIONEER RESIDENT OF COUNTY, DIES John Musselman Bretz, 81, pioneer Buffalo County resident, died in a Kearney hospital early Sunday. The son of Lewis and Catherin Bretz, he was born March 29, 1873, in Wayne County, Iowa. At the age of seven, he came to Nebraska with his parents, making the trip in a covered wagon. The family settled on a farm near Kearney. He later married Emma Zimmer of Pleasanton, and the couple farmed in the northern part of the county until 1920, when they moved to a farm southwest of Gibbon. He retired from the farm in 1941, Living four years in Ravenna, and came to Gibbon in 1945. He had been in failing health the past years, and had been living at the St. Luke's home since last September. He became seriously ill about two weeks ago and was taken to the hospital. Mr. Bretz had spent the past 74 years in Buffalo County. One daughter, Ethel preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Emma; two sons, Sam of Gibbon and Tom of Minden; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Robb of Omaha and Mrs. Grant Oxley of Monte Vista, Colo.; two grandchildren, Jerry Bretz of Minden and Mrs. Gene Tyler of Omaha; and one sister, Mrs. Robert Pearson of Pleasanton. Funeral services will be at 2. p.m., Tuesday from the Miller-Godberson Funeral Home, Gibbon, with Rev. Charles Swindells officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Gibbon. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday.
