E, 126th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry JOHN MUTTI AN EARLY DAY RESIDENT DIES SUDDENLY Native of Switzerland, Soldier of the Civil War, In Many Battles John Mutti died at the family home at the northwest part of the city, Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 O'Clock. He had been trimming bushes in the yard becoming exhausted he reached the house and with assistance reached his bed where he in a few minutes quietly and peaceably passed away. Mr. Mutti was born at or near Gisenstein in Canton Bern, Switzerland on November 27, 1837. At age 16, he came with his family to America in 1853. They located in Ohio, where he grew to manhood. In answer to the call of President Lincoln in July of 1862, for troops he joined the 126th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers. They were engaged in many bloody battles including Martinsburg, Wapping Heights, Bristoe, Kelley's Ford, Brandy Station, Mine Run, Locust Grove, Wilderness, Winchester, Opequan, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, Siege of Petersburg, Shenandoah Valley and the capture of Richmond, all places in Virginia. He was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness on the 6th day of May, 1864. A bullet lodged in his left shoulder which he carried the rest of his life. After a three months stay in the hospital he returned to the front for further duty. He was honorably discharged on the 25th day of June 1865, and returned to his home in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. On December 14, 1865, he was united in marriage to Anna Elizabeth Beutler. This union was blessed with eleven children all of whom grew to maturity. He is survived by his wife, 10 children, 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. The 7 sons are Edward, John, Albert, Henry, Charles, Walter, and Oscar. The daughters, Mrs. Naomi Hodel, Mrs. Malinda McKinney and Miss Emma Mutti. Mrs. Caroline Schilb died at Warrensburg, Mo. in 1911. The funeral services will be at the Evangelical Church, of which he was a member, Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. J. C. Bierbaum officiating, burial at the Rohrbach cemetery near his old home. Mr. Mutti was a fine Christian gentleman of the hardy pioneer type. He was a true and faithful husband, a good father and a friend to all who knew him.
