Private burial of his cremated remains will be at Nevada Cemetery at a later date. John was born in Blockton, Iowa on December 24, 1911 to Ansel and Beulah (Crouch) Freeland. Freeland, 98, of Des Moines died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street, Des Moines. Private burial of his cremated remains will be at Nevada Cemetery at a later date. John was born in Blockton, Iowa on December 24, 1911 to Ansel and Beulah (Crouch) Freeland. He grew up in Nevada and attended Iowa State University before joining the family grocery store business in Nevada. John was active in the Nevada community affairs. He began working for the Des Moines Register and Tribune in 1945, and moved his family to Des Moines in 1950. He retired in 1977. His final assignment with the Register was as Circulation Promotion Director. John was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was also a charter member and past President of the Golden K. Kiwanis Club. In retirement, John enjoyed playing his Hammond organ and writing at his Smith-Corona mechanical typewriter. John married Patricia Irish in 1935, and she preceded him in death in 2002. His brother, Garrett Lanson Freeland also preceded him in death as well as his special friend at Calvin Community, Julia Cawelti. He is survived by his daughter, Judy (James K.) Peterson of Apple Valley, MN; son, John C. (Carolyn R.) Freeland of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Nancy (Joel) Shepperly, Kate (Bruce) Henningsgaard, Andrea (Jason) Cox, Carl (Suzanne) Freeland, Jean (Mo) Bedrossian; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Lydia and Gregory Shepperly; Claire and Ellen Henningsgaard; Madeline and Dillon Cox; and Garrett Freeland. John and his family appreciated the care and concern of staff and residents of Calvin Community, as well as professionals of Hospice Center of Central Iowa.
