From the WW1 Draft Registration Card, September 12, 1918: John Nathaniel Franklin, of Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland, was born December 9, 1872. He was a self-employed Farmer on his own land. His wife's name was Margaret Franklin. Article about Thornbrook Farm from the Frederick Post of Thursday, July 8, 1920: "Thornbrook Renovated. 'Thornbrook,' near Thurmont, the former home of the poet and professor, George H. Miles, has recently been painted inside and out in colors of white, bright brown and green by Liday Brothers, Thurmont. This work has cost its present owner, John N. Franklin, $1,000. Thornbrook is a large mansion resting on a foundation of 292 ft. perimeter and contains 19 large rooms with 14 ft. ceilings. Besides a large room which the poet used as a chapel, there is a fine ball-room, a billiard room, and a large bath room, while wide airy halls and corridors add to the beauty of the interior. John C. Cox (sic,should read Jeremiah C. Fox), the father-in-law of the present owner,purchased this building with 100 acres of wooded land 36 years ago." Obituary for John Nathaniel Franklin from the Frederick News Post of Saturday, December 9, 1950: "JOHN N. FRANKLIN. John Nathaniel Franklin, well-known farmer of St. Anthony's, died 10:30 p.m. Friday after an illness of about two weeks following a cerebral hemorrhage, aged 76 years. A son of the late James and Annlee Franklin of Clifton Forge, Virginia. He was a member of the Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Margaret E. Fox Franklin; these children: Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Larson, Japan; John C. Franklin, Baltimore; Margaret V., Charles Wilson and Leanna Franklin, at home; sisters, Mrs. William O. Smith and Mrs. William H. Voet, Baltimore; Mrs. William Glynn, Silver Spring; two grandchildren, Carl and Elise Larson, Japan. Funeral services are to be announced. M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors." Funeral notice for John N. Franklin from the Frederick News of Tuesday, December 12, 1950: "Funeral services for John M. (sic) Franklin, of near Thurmont, who died at his home 'Thornbrook Farm,' Friday were conducted Monday afternoon, 2 o'clock, at Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church. Rev. Charles W. Owens, officiated. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Pallbearers were: Saylor Weybright, Lewis Seiss, Elmer Bollinger, Charles Eckenrode, Preston Favorite and W. O. Shank. Interment was in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont. M. L. Creager and Son, funeral directors."
