He had resided in Blakesburg the past ten years, his daughter, Mrs. Blanche Bennett and her son, La Verne, making their home with him. He was married April 14, 1891 to Almeda Christine Lathrop. Four sons, and one daughter were born to this union, Orville, of Fairfield, Wilbur, of Ottumwa, Edgar, of Blakesburg, Carl, and Mrs. Bennett. Surviving are the daughter and three sons, eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two sister, Mrs. Florence Ede of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Rachel Burton of Wichita, Kansas. His wife preceded him in death in 1918, and the son Carl died in 1949. Also deceased are one sister, and five brothers, three grandchildren who died in infancy and a grandson, Kenneth Christy, who was killed in the service in Africa in 1943. A brother, Loren R. Shields followed him in death in less than 48 hours, having died in the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa, Saturday evening. The funeral services were held at the Knedler funeral home at 2 p.m., Sunday, with the Rev. Howard Marshall in charge. Burial was in the Wellman cemetery east of Blakesburg, grandsons serving as pallbearers. Note: *This site has been sponsored by grandson Newton Laverne Shields.
