Newton Smith Dies At His Center Junction Home Friday Funeral rites held Monday; Burial At North Madison Another Jones county pioneer was called last Friday when John Newton Smith passed away at his farm home near Center Junction. Funeral services were held at the home at 11 o'clock Monday, Dec. 30, with Rev. F. G. Tyrrell of the Presbyterian church in charge. Burial was made in the North Madison cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by old time friends from all parts of the county. Mr. Smith held an important place, in the agricultural program of the county during his active years. The following obituary has been prepared for publication: Born in 1865 John Newton Smith was born April 25, 1865, on a farm 1 1/2 miles south of Center Junction. His parents, John and Elisabeth Smith, were both born in Scotland and were among the first settlers of the Center Junction community. Of the ten children in his family, one brother, James R., and two sisters, Agnes and Jessie, have preceded him in death. He is survived by his sisters, Ellen Crans of Davenport, and Annie Doran of Cedar Rapids, and his four brothers, David of Des Moines, Benjamin of Miles City, Mont., William and A. G. of Center Junction. In his youth he attended high school in Wyoming, business college at Davenport, and Cornell College academy, Mount Vernon. Marriage On December 17, 1885 -55 years ago- he was united in marriage to Rachel Nichols of Center Junction. To this happy marriage were born four children: Vera Kempf of Boone, Gladys McNeilly of Center Junction, Paul of Anamosa, and Stuart of Ames. Twelve grandchildren, to whom he was devoted, will always remember him with affection. His passing is the first break in the immediate family circle. Except for three years' residence in Mount Vernon his entire married life was spent at the farm home where he passed away on Dec. 27, 1940. He believed in taking an active part in community affairs and was a member of the first Center Junction band. At various times he served on the board of directors of many organizations including the school board, telephone company, county farm bureau, shipping association, creamery, and bank. He also acted as trustee of the Presbyterian church, of which he was a member. Master Farmer A pioneer in good agriculture, he was one of the oldest Master Farmers in the state, having received this award in 1928. Possessing a strong faith in the destiny of America, he believed in the duties of active citizenship. He had an abiding faith in his Heavenly Father and in his last long illness of two years looked forward with eagerness to the moment when he would be gathered home to his eternal rest.
