A feeling of sadness spread o'er the town and vicinity when it became known that John Nihil had passed away on Wednesday evening, July 26, aged 79 yrs., 8 mos and 15 days. He was born in Clare county, Ireland, Nov. 11th, 1831, and came with his parents to the U.S. in 1845, settling in the eastern states. In a few years the family journeyed westward to Ohio, and later to Bloomington, Ill., where he was married to Mary Mulligan in 1862. Eight children were born to them, three dying in infancy. Deceased was a hard working, honest man, who labored under many difficulties since losing his arm early in life while feeding a threshing machine. His trials were many yet he never wavered from the path of duty. He was a sincere Catholic and a man of strong convictions of right and wrong. With the help of his faithful wife he reared his family who now stand as living monuments to do honor to the memory of his splendid character. He moved to Seward county with his wife and family in 1889, and to Ulysses in 1906. He was a staunch democrat and as such was elected assessor of C township. His wife died in 1909 and since then his health began to fail, though he always maintained his cheerful disposition and died peacefully with perfect trust in the Savior's mercy. Yes, a truly good man has gone, who had lived his allotted years faithfully and well. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Murphy at the Ulysses Catholic church and the remains laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. The long line of carriages which followed the remains to their last resting place, gave proof of the high esteem in which he was held. Deceased is survived by two sisters, five childfren, four grand-children and numerous other relatives. The children are Mrs. P. J. Considine of David City, Mrs. John Kelly, Patsy, Mary and Katie of Ulysses, and the four grand children Mary and Luetta Considine, Leona and John Kelly were all present at the funeral. Relatives who came from a distance were Mr. & Mrs. John Gubbins and Miss Nellie Clark from Chicago, the latter two being grand-nieces of the deceased; also Thos. Nihil, a nephew from Chicago, and Mrs. Nihil, a sister-in-law, and daughter from Kansas City. Among the collection of flowers was a large, beautiful pillow of roses with the word "Father" neatly interwoven in the center. Dear father you are gone from us, No sadder words could be. Our lives were twined around thy life, Our love was deep for thee. To God's all just, all powerful will Submissively we bow, But Jesus, do Thou comfort us, Our hearts are lonely now.
