Description	:	John Norman Nelson died Sunday, November 14, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. John was born October 20, 1930 to Norman and Florence (Frager) Nelson near Madison, SD. He graduated from Madison High School in 1948, worked as a carpenter, and then worked at Fort Randall Dam. John served during the Korean War at Camp Rucker, AL. Read More	John Norman Nelson died Sunday, November 14, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. John was born October 20, 1930 to Norman and Florence (Frager) Nelson near Madison, SD. He graduated from Madison High School in 1948, worked as a carpenter, and then worked at Fort Randall Dam. John served during the Korean War at Camp Rucker, AL. He married Miriam Halvorson on January 20, 1951. Following his discharge, he farmed near Irene and Viborg. He counted it a privilege to serve as president of Calvary Lutheran Church when it was built. John served on the school board, the township board, various positions on the church council, and enjoyed working the Via de Cristo weekends for many years. John was a member of the Irene American Legion for over 50 years working with the baseball team and the firing squad. Survivors include his wife, Miriam, and children Elizabeth (John) Johnson, Sioux Falls, Elaine (Wayne) Oolman, Brandon, John (Joan) Nelson, Irene, Susan (Herman) Colvin, Bellevue, NE, and Steven (Crystal) Nelson, Irene; ten grandsons and ten great-grandchildren; mother, Florence, Yarmouth Port, MA; brothers Ray, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Dennis (Linda), Marblehead, MA; sister Sharon, Yarmouth Port, MA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, J. Norman; stepfather, Arnold, and sisters Dorothy and Marlys. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Centerville, SD Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
