Answers the final summons of the Grim Reaper on Monday evening last. The sad word reached here Tuesday morning that the death of J. O. Julson occurred at the Swedish hospital in Minneapolis at 9 o'clock Monday evening, Dec. 18th, 1911, following a sickness of nearly months duration during which time he underwent four surgical operations, the last one of which was on Friday morning last. Mr. Julson was taken sick the last of August with what the attending physician pronounced to be appendicitis. He was immediately taken to the Huron hospital and operated on for appendicitis. He slowly improved so that he was able to return home about three or four weeks later. But the improvement did not continue and in a few days the surgeons were called from Huron and performed another operation. He then seemed to gather strength and was able to get out considerable and thot that he would soon recover. However, he could feel that he was not just right and on Nov. 17th he concluded to seek treatment from the specialists at Rochester, Minn. Whether the good surgeons read his case correctly on not, he wrote back that they advised a long rest and a warmer climate. He visited his daughter, Miss Ella, of Windom, Minn., and then went to Forest City, Iowa, to visit a cousin before starting to California. At the latter place he was taken sick again, and his cousin took him to the Swedish hospital in Minneapolis for treatment. Soon after reaching there he underwent another operation. But that did not bring the relief sought and on Friday last, the knife of the trained surgeons was again applied. The seat of all the trouble was found, and it proved to be a cancer. He had sent for his wife before the last operation, so that she was with him, as were also their daughter, Esther, and his sister, Mrs. H. C. Michaelson. The doctors could hold out little or no hopes for recovery, and the end came Monday evening. If he had lived three hours longer, death would have overtaken him on his forty-fourth birthday. John Oliver Julson was born Dec. 19th, 1866, at Perry, Dane county, Wisconsin. He was educated in the schools of that locality and for some time attended high school at Dodgeville. In March, 1886, he came to Lake Preston, South Dakota, with his parents, sisters and brother. On Sept. 28th, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Sina Lunde, the wife who mourns his early death. Aside from spending a year or two in De Smet soon after their marriage, when he served as deputy in the office of the county auditor, Lake Preston has always been the family home. To the union eleven children were born, ten of whom survive, Ella, Clara, Sarah, Esther, Victor, Walter, Marie, Helen, Alice and Ruth, one daughter having died when but a few days old. Besides the family, his aged mother, one brother, Otto A. Julson and five sisters, Mrs. Wm. Johnson, Mrs. Ben Julson, Mrs. Ben Strand, Mrs. H. C. Michaelson and Miss Caroline survive. The remains arrived home from Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, accompanied by the wife and daughter and James Lewis who was called there Monday night as one of the last requests of the deceased. Mr. Julson has been employed at various occupations, was county surveyor for several years, purchased grain for a feed[?] company for a few years and later has been secretary and treasurer of the Lake Preston Milling Co. He was a good husband and father, and a kind neighbor. His death is a blow not only to his family but every acquaintance. About one year ago, he sold his residence property in this place and the past summer erected a fine modern house upon his acreage just east of the city limits. The family had but just moved in and settled when he was taken sick. With all of his ambitions to have a fine home, he could live for only a few weeks to enjoy the pleasure and conveniences. Miss Ella Julson, the eldest daughter, arrived from Windom, Minn., where she is employed as a stenographer in a bank, on Tuesday evening, so that all the children were present at the funeral. Mrs. B. M. Julson, a sister of the deceased, arrived from Flandreau last evening to attend the funeral. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. W. B. Dahl, the burial taking place in the Lake Preston cemetery. The church was filled with his neighbors and friends nearly all our business houses being closed who gathered to pay their last respects. The floral tributes were especially fine, and we desire to mention in particular the set pieces provided by the local lodge of the M. W. A. [Modern Woodmen of America], of which he was an honored member and by the R. N. A. [Royal Neighbors of America], and Lutheran Ladies Aid Society, both of which the wife is a member.
