Description	:	Obituary of John Skorheim John Skorheim, a resident of Norway Township since 1873, passed away at his home last Sunday evening at 9:20, death resulting from hemorrhage of the brain, and the deceased pioneer would have been 77 years old on the 14th of next month. He came from Decorah, Iowa to Sioux City in 1872, and a year later entered a homestead in Norway township, where he has resided ever since. Read More	Obituary of John Skorheim John Skorheim, a resident of Norway Township since 1873, passed away at his home last Sunday evening at 9:20, death resulting from hemorrhage of the brain, and the deceased pioneer would have been 77 years old on the 14th of next month. He came from Decorah, Iowa to Sioux City in 1872, and a year later entered a homestead in Norway township, where he has resided ever since. He was a prominent member of Lands Church and was one to the original organization. He was a very genial gentlemen and highly esteened by his neighbors and served his township for three years as assessor. Some twelve years ago he suffered the loss of a leg by amputation, the cause originating back in the old country when he was about 18 years of age, at which time his leg was injured between two rocks. He labored under this disadvantage until amputation became necessary, after which he used a patent leg to good advantage. The chief mourners are his widow, one daughter Inga and five sons, Ole, Bennie, Marvin, Anton and Albert and all where with him when the end came with the exception of Bennie who arrived Monday. Informal funeral services were held at the home of the deceased at one o'clock Tuesday, after which the casket was taken to Lands Church where the funeral services were held and conducted by Rev. Dakota Farmers' Leader; Canton, South Dakota; Friday 3 Feb 1899 John Skorheim departed for Chicago Tuesday Jan. 17, to have his right leg amputated. A letter received yesterday brings the information the operation was successfully performed last Tuesday, which fact his many friends are glad to hear. Mr. Skorheim has been troubled for the last 50 years with a chronic sore on one of his legs resulting from an accident when only 18 years old. The sore would never heal up and always bothered him considerably. About two years ago he got so much worse as to be entirely cripped up. He has suffered great pain and has been bed-ridden most of the time since. Although repeatedly advised so by the doctors he naturally dreaded an amputation and always put it off, saying he would rather have the foot follow his to the grave. But as he got worse and the pain became greater he finally decided to go to Chicago and have his foot amputated. Mr. Shorheim has taken an active part in all the affairs in this community for the last 25 years or more and is well liked and respected by all, young and old alike. Consequently whe his old-time frienda and neighbors heard of his intent they at once started up a voluntary subsscription list with which to help him defray expenses on his trip. Rev L J Hange made lists. Gilbert Moen, Nels Dahl, Tom Ulrikson and Simon Rise carried them and the people donated generously in all about $175. Mr. Skorheim desires the list printed in the LEADER and wishes to thank all for the many favors shown him and the kind assistance given him during his long siege of illness and especially does he wish to thank those who so kindly and generously remembered him on the lists.
