Description	:	John was the second son of German immigrants, Johann Michael Georg Oberholz and Pauline Haas, who met in Newark. The first son was Charles. Michael Oberholz was killed in a shoe manufacturing accident and buried in Newark. The widow remarried to Antoine Kellner, also a German immigrant. Kellner brought the family west to Iowa City and then to Omaha where Pauline died in 1877. John ran away from home at the age of 12 and made his way back to Iowa City where Charles had gone.
