Mr. Alderman joined his father, John Alderman, in the practice of law in Hillsville following his graduation from the University of Virginia Law School in 1958. Read More	Alderman, John Perry, age 59, a Hillsville attorney, died Saturday, July 1, 1995 at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax following a brief illness. Mr. Alderman joined his father, John Alderman, in the practice of law in Hillsville following his graduation from the University of Virginia Law School in 1958. He had received his bachelors degree from Emory and Henry College, graduating with honors in 1955. At UVA Mr. Alderman was selected for the Order of the Coif. He was elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Carroll County five consecutive times, first in 1963, holding that post until 1981, when President Reagan appointed him United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. He served in this federal position until 1990 when he resigned and returned to Hillsville to resume private law practice. Mr. Alderman taught trial advocacy in programs at the University of Virginia for a number of years. He also taught course ins criminal justice at the Wytheville Community College. He served as a member of the Board of Visitors of Radford University, holding the position of Rector in 1980-81. Mr. Alderman was a member of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, serving it in many capacities over the years, including positions of Treasurer, Deacon and Elder. Mr. Alderman was active in the Republican Party at local, state and national levels, serving for many years as Chairman of the party in Carroll County. A well known genealogist and historian, he authored a number of books of family histories in Carroll and Grayson Counties. In addition, he was an authority on the Civil War. He wrote the history of the 29th Virginia Infantry, a Confederate regiment largely made up of men from Western Virginia, and contributed to many other Virginia regimental histories. Mr. Alderman is survived by his widow, Marion Allen Alderman of Hillsville, his parents, John and Elizabeth Perry Alderman also of Hillsville; a son, John Owen Alderman of Bloomington, Minnesota; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Greene Alderman McDaniel and Charles Russell McDaniel Jr., and a grandson, Conan Taylor McDaniel, all of Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Taylor and Pamela McKinney Alderman of Virginia Beach; and a number of beloved aunts. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 4, at 11 a.m at the Vaughn-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home in Hillsville.. Visiting hours will be held at the Hillsville Presbyterian Church in Hillsville on Monday, July 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, the Carroll County Rescue Squad, Emory and Henry College, or a worthy cause of your choice.
