Brown, an early resident of Grundy county, who led a long and a colorful life, died in Allen Memorial hospital at Waterloo early Friday morning. Death followed the shock of a fall he sustained at his home on the evening of July 3 when he fractured his hip. He was taken to the Allen Memorial hospital at Waterloo for care and treatment. Because of his advanced age, nothing could be done to bring a permanent cure. He was 93 years old. Up to the time of his accident he was both healthy, vigorous and had retained all of his faculties. Funeral services were held at the home in Parkersburg Sunday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Albert R. Rice, pastor of the Parkersburg Congregational church. The body was placed in a crypt in the Brown mausoleum which Mr. Brown erected in the cemetery adjoining Salem Lutheran church in Beaver township. The mausoleum was erected about forty years ago. His first wife is buried there. Was An Indian Scout Mr. Brown was born in Delavan, Wisconsin, March 9, 1848. He was twelve years old when Lincoln was elected president for the first time and he remembered incidents of the campaign which resulted in Lincoln's election. For a number of years he was in the service of the government as an Indian scout and he assisted and directed pioneers to Iowa and other mid-western states that experienced much trouble with the Indians during the 70s and the 80s. He made several trips through Iowa while in the Indian scouting service and he picked Grundy county as the best spot for him to settle down. He bought a farm in Beaver township and made that his home for many years, until he moved to Parkersburg into retirement. After coming to Grundy county he was married to Mrs. Mary Jenisch and they began housekeeping on their Beaver township farm. Married a Second Time at 86 A few years after the death of his first wife Mr. Brown married a second time when he was 86 years old. That was seven years ago. Mr. Brown took an active interest in civic matters and he was a consistent lodge member. He was an active member in the Masonic Lodge, the Easter Star, and a Knight Templar of Cedar Falls Baldwin Commandery.
