TRUCK DRIVER FATALLY HURT Injuries Sustained by John Kunkel, Remsen Drayman, Cause His Death SKULL WAS FRACTURED Injuries sustained by John Kunkel, a Remsen drayman, when his truck crashed into an Illinois Central freight train at Remsen Friday afternoon proved fatal Monday night. Mr. Kunkel was rushed to the Sacred Heart hospital in Le Mars after the accident. His condition at first gave out hopes of recovery, but early Monday morning he rapidly grew weaker. He was unconscious for the greater part of the time after the accident until death ensued. Kunkel, who was engaged in draying in Remsen, suffered concussion of the brain, a broken ankel and numerous cuts about the face and internal injuries. It is stated that the train which struck the truck was an extra frelght. Mr. Kunkel in the course of his work was acquainted with the running time of trains through Remsen. The railroad crossing at Remsen is considered unsafe by some and several accidents have oocurrred at different times at the spot. The passenger station at the north side of the track completely hides the track from that direction and box cars and low buildings further obsecure the view. Accordingly, it is difficult to see very far up or down the track until one is almost upon it, and many Remsen residents rely on their knowledge of train times to apprise them of danger. Mr. Kunkel was one of these. Knowing that no train was due at the time of the accident, he drove over the tracks without hesitation, and saw the on rushing freight train too late to stop. The truck was smashed to pieces by the impact, the wreckage being carried a considerable distance along the track before being thrown to one side. Hardly any part of the truck remained whole except two wheels. Born In Wisconsin Mr. Kunkel had been a resident of Plymouth county thirtyfive years, coming here with his parents from Wisconsin when a boy in 1893 and received his educa-tion in the schools and helped on the farm. He had made his home in Remsen for the past ten years. John Kunkel was born at Kieler, Wisconsin, July 28, 1883. He was united in marriage in 1916 with Miss Catherine Burke, of Plymouth county. His death is mourned by his wife, his aged mother, Mrs. Margaret Kunkel, his sister, Mrs. John Salentine, and his brothers, Joseph Kunkel, Frank Kunkel and Andrew Kunkel, and many friends. Mr. Kunkel was well known and had many friends who extend the famlly condolences in their tragic loss. The funeral will be held this Friday morning with services at St. Mary's church at 10 o'clock and the interment will be made in the St. Joseph cemetery In Le Mars, where other relatives are buried.
