Description	:	John Pickar was born at Bollendorf, Germany on May 12, 1853. He came to America with his parents when he was 8yrs of age, settling near Sauk City, Wisconsin. In the year of 1873 he came to Chickasaw County, Iowa and settled on a farm in Deerfield township where he made his home until 10 years ago, when he moved to North Washington and has made his home there ever since. Read More	John Pickar was born at Bollendorf, Germany on May 12, 1853. He came to America with his parents when he was 8yrs of age, settling near Sauk City, Wisconsin. In the year of 1873 he came to Chickasaw County, Iowa and settled on a farm in Deerfield township where he made his home until 10 years ago, when he moved to North Washington and has made his home there ever since. He was married to Margaret Kalen at North Washington on Feb 28,1878 by Reverend J.P. Probst. To this union 12 were born, 2 of whom died in infancy: Oscar, age 1 month and Peter, age 9 months. He was survived by his widow and the following children, Christina Goebel, Mary Wisher, Elizabeth Goebel, Anna Wisher, John Jr, Joseph, Edward and Raymond. He was also survived by an aged brother, Dominick Pickar of Wadena, Minnesota. When you look back 50 years to the time that Mr. Pickar settled in this county and commenced farming in Deerfield township, you realize that there was considerable work to be done in those days to get the land in shape for cultivation and sowing and reaping, stacking and threshing was a slow and tedious job. It took years of hard work to improve the farm, but Mr. Pickar kept right on working year after year, gradually making headway and succeeding in the work he liked so well and in which he devoted 50 yrs of his life on the same farm. Not until after he had succeeded in raising a large excellent family, and had made good use of his time and labor up to 10 years ago when he was 70 years of age, did he vacate the farm he loved so well, and took up his residence in North Washington. Mr. Pickar possessed a reputation for honesty and integrity. He was a man who always commanded the respect of his neighbors and friends and his name has long been an honored one in the vicinity in which he lived. He was a good husband and father and the family circle has been deprived of one who was greatly cherished by all of them. The family has the heartfelt sympathy of all in their sorrow.
