He was born May 1, 1936, in Delmar to Leo and Delores Gannon (O'Toole). He attended Welton Elementary and Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, and Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. Read More	Mr. John Philip Gannon, 80, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Welton, died Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Mercy Hospice, Johnston. He was born May 1, 1936, in Delmar to Leo and Delores Gannon (O'Toole). He attended Welton Elementary and Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, and Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. On December 26, 1966, John was united in marriage to Jeanne Lenaghan at St. Pius X Church in Rock Island, Illinois. The family lived and farmed north of Welton until 2004 when they retired and moved to Ankeny. He was a member of St. Anne's in Welton as well as St. Catherine of Siena in Des Moines. He was an active member of the Iowa Association of the Deaf and had served as President. He received the Hamilton Relay Deaf Community Leader Award, the Iowa Association of the Deaf Distinguished Service Award, and was inducted into the Iowa School for the Deaf Hall of Fame. He was enthusiastic and passionate about supporting organizations geared toward the deaf and was instrumental in the establishment of relay services in Iowa. John enjoyed farming, pig and cattle shows, horse racing and watching sports. Even while living in Ankeny, he was a loyal Saber fan and enjoyed following his hometown activities. Surviving are his wife of nearly 50 years, Jeanne; children, Bob (Dana) Gannon of Delmar and Brenna (Brant) Kahler of Johnston; grandchildren, Carson, Blaine and Addison Gannon, Gemma and Hazel Kahler; siblings, Mary Massey, Napa, California, Tom (Judy) Gannon, DeWitt, and Rita Enters, Brookfield Wisconsin; sisters-in-law Madonna Gannon, Delmar, and Susie Gannon, Marion; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding John in death were his parents and siblings James Gannon, Richard Gannon and infant sister Sarah. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14th at St. Catherine of Siena in Des Moines, with a prayer service at 4:00. The family will also receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16th with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt with the Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Mercy Hospice, Johnston. Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt
