John Pierce McClurg was born March 8, 1849 at Elizabethtown, now a part of Pittsburgh, Penn. and died at Valley Falls, Kansas, Tuesday morning at 2 oclock, October 20, 1914, aged 65 years, 7 months and 12 days. When he was but four years of age he moved with his parents to Jerseyville, Athens County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood and was married to Sara E. Blazer, October 14, 1875. To this union six children were born: Cora May of Ozawkie, Kansas, Joseph E. and Adelaide of Valley Falls, Blanche B. Bellamy of Knoxville, Iowa, Dr. Cyrus B. of Chicago, and John G. of Chillicothe, Ill. all of whom with the mother survive. His two sisters living are Mrs. S. M. Cramer of Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Mrs. S. J. Stewart of Athens, Ohio. His is the first death in the little family. From Ohio Mr. McClurg located on his farm south of Valley Falls in 1894 where he has since resided. In childhood he was baptized in the Presbyterian church, and while his name was recorded on no church roll here, he lived a true christian life and was highly respected by all who knew him as a man of honor, a good neighbor and dear father and husband. He was a member of the F. A. A. at Valley Falls. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral was held from the home Thursday morning, the services being conducted by Rev. Chas. Kimball, pastor of the Christian church, where the family attended worship.
