Description	:	Decatur County Journal December 19, 1906 John Piper, the subject of this sketch, was born October the 11, 1833 in Columbiana County, Ohio, and died at his home in Eden Township, December 5, 1906, aged 73 years, 1 month and 22 days. He had been in poor health for some time, but his death was sudden and peaceful due to complication of old age. John Piper was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Ward Piper on June 5, 1855 who still survives him. To this union twelve children were born, four of whom died in infancy. ... John Piper was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Ward Piper on June 5, 1855 who still survives him. To this union twelve children were born, four of whom died in infancy. The living are Emmett, Jacob, Charles, Louella, Dora. Zora, John and Harvey, all of whom were present. He enlisted in Company H 140th Ohio Volunteers, on March 10, 1864, and received a certificate of thanks and an honorable discharge in September 1864. He, with his family, moved to Iowa the same year where he bought a farm in Eden Township, where they have since resided. He was a kind indulgent husband and father, a good and respected citizen and neighbor. Funeral services were held from the home on Wednesday, December 5, under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post, interment being in the Leon Cemetery. Two of the four children dying in infancy were named Bennie and Sarah L. Both are buried in the Manchester Cemetery, Eden Twp. Decatur County, Iowa Son Charles married Martha Ann Stephens Piper and both are buried in Bethel Cemetery, Eden Twp. Decatur County, Iowa. Zora May Piper married Henry Walter McNelly. Son Emmett Piper married Ida Bell Hatfield the daughter of James Wiley and Sarah Esther Stanley Hatfield. Harvey Piper and wife Imogene are buried in the Davis City, Decatur County, Iowa.
