Description	:	Missionary to the Dakotas; his father was Dr. Thomas S. Williamson, also a frontier missionary. He played with Dakota children when he was growing up, and developed a deep appreciation of their culture. Two years later, the Dakota War broke out when a hostile band of Dakota attacked the Lower Sioux Agency on Aug. 18, 1862. Most Dakota were against the war and refused to participate, even at risk to their own lives. The hostile Dakota who did participate killed over 650 European Americans, most of whom were civilians. Over 300 Dakota men were imprisoned by a military commission to be tried for killing civilians or for simply participating in the war. Most other Dakota not accused of crimes, including women and children, and the friendly Indians who did not participate in the war, were encamped at Fort Snelling. John went to minister among them, preaching, teaching, baptizing, and helping them any way he could during the harsh winter of 1862-63. In the spring of 1863, almost all of the Dakota were forced to leave their homes in Minnesota and to live on a desolate, barren reservation at Crow Creek in Dakota territory. He followed them there, continuing his ministry among them. Conditions were so harsh and food so scarce that over 300 Dakotas died within the first three months. He negotiated with the US Government on their behalf to allow them to hunt buffalo, and is credited with saving over 1,000 Dakota from starvation. He loved the Dakota people and continued to minister among them for the remainder of his life.
