His death occurred at about 8 o'clock p.m. Saturday, December 30, 1922, following about a two weeks illness from pneumonia. John Popkin was born in Germany May 15, 1835, and where on May 1, 1863, he was united in marriage to Miss Meta Jorach [sic], who preceded him in death. His arrival in America was in May 1885, coming direct to Hooper and locating on the farm 8 miles north of town which had been his home ever since and which is now managed by his son, Diedrich. In his thirty seven years residence here he had made a wide acquaintanceship and his passing away is sincerely regretted by all. He was a man industrious and thrifty, one whom it was a pleasure to have as a neighbor and friend, and the friends he made he held. He was the father of seven children, four sons and three daughters, six of whom survive their father. They are: Mrs. Diedrich Suhr, of Stockton, Calif., and Mrs. Wm. Feye, Mrs. John Claasen, John H., Herman and Diedrich of this community. He is also survived by thirty nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, with services at 1:30 at the late home and at 2 o'clock at the St. Pauls Lutheran church, north of Hooper, the pastor, Rev. R. Kunzendorf, conducting them. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
