Father Thomas Vopatek conducted funeral services which were held at 9 a. m. Wednesday at the Rayman home and at 10 o’clock at the Immaculate Conception church. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery, west of town. Pall bearers were Frank Chamra, John Husak, John Roubinek, J. C. Konicek, F. E. Caslavka and Joe Kriz. Mr. Vavra, among other distinctions, had sixty-six living descendants at the time of his death—six children, thirty grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren. He was born in Tabor, Bohemia, Feb. 9, 1844 and was married at Cetule, Bohemia, Feb. 24, 1868, to Anna Kriz. In 1876 the couple came to America with their four eldest children. Six others were born to them here. Four of the children have since died, and Mrs. Vavra died about twenty-four years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Vavra lived in Chicago for about two months after first arriving in this country then came west to Marshall county, where the former worked in the rock quarries. Later he worked for various farmers in this vicinity and rented several farms which he operated. After his retirement from active work he lived with his children, making his home for the last nine years with Mrs. Rayman in Clutier. Nearly ten years ago, he passed through a critical illness from which he was not expected to recover, but he later became almost as well as before and was out of the house daily until less than three months before his death. He was a respected citizen who enjoyed a wide circle of friends in the community. The living children are Theresa, wife of Frank Popper Sr., of Clutier; Frank, near Chelsea; Mike, of Tama; Joe, of Ferguson, la.; Anna, who is Mrs. Rayman; and Tom, of Scribner, Neb. A daughter, Celia, died at the age of 2; and a son, James, when only 4 years old John, another son, died about fifteen years ago, and Mary, a daughter, who was Mrs. Frunk Slaboch, about 1917.
