He was born May 10, 1920, in Mahaska County, near Leighton, Iowa, the son of James and Cora DeRooi Drost. He graduated from the 8th grade in the Lacey Consolidated School and received his high school G.E.D. while in the military. John served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, serving from January 1941 until discharged in October of 1945, and attended the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City, Missouri, and flew nearly 5,000 hours with Col. Herbert Tillman. After his military service he returned to Iowa, and on June 18, 1946, was united in marriage to Bernice L. Bloem. Together they farmed for 30 years southwest of New Sharon, Iowa, before moving to Arizona in 1971. He then worked as a purchasing agent for the Motorola Company until retiring. On July 2, 2001, his wife, Bernice died. John came back to the Oskaloosa area in May 2002. His family includes a son and his wife, David and Della Kay Drost of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Terry Waugh of Austin, Texas; 2 grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Drost; two great-grandchildren, Iggy and Kylie Drost; a brother and his wife, Shirley "Short" and Mary Drost of Republic, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Ada Drost of Oskaloosa and Gertrude Drost of Whitewater, Wisconsin; and his close friend and care giver, Betty Barnard of Oskaloosa. Besides his wife, John was also preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Fred, William, Richard, and an infant brother. Funeral services for John Drost will be held Friday, November 28, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloos,a with the Reverend Dale Visser officiating. There will a family prayer service Friday at 10:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall in the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Leighton, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa V.F.W., D.A.V., and American Legion. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Thursday after 3 p.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
