Description	:	John R. Smith was the son of William Smith. He married Mary Dougherty in 1827 in Guernsey, Ohio and they settled in Jefferson County, Ohio where they raised several children before moving to Iowa where the remainder of their 11 children were born. John earned a living as a carpenter, as did several of his sons. John and Mary eventually moved to Nebraska with their son Nathaniel.
