Description	:	John Rager IV was born in Pickaway Township of Ross County, Ohio (today part of Pickaway County) on February 27, 1814. He was the fifth of six children of John Rager III (1780-1870) and Catharine (Valentine) Rager (1780-1835). His father came from Pennsylvania and his mother from Maryland. Read More	John Rager IV was born in Pickaway Township of Ross County, Ohio (today part of Pickaway County) on February 27, 1814. He was the fifth of six children of John Rager III (1780-1870) and Catharine (Valentine) Rager (1780-1835). His father came from Pennsylvania and his mother from Maryland. His father served in the First Regiment of Ohio Volunteers during the War of 1812. John's father purchased land in Madison Township of Franklin County, Ohio in 1814 and moved his young family to this parcel of 200 acres four miles west of the future town of Canal Winchester. The town was named such as the Ohio and Erie Canal came through in 1831. Canal Winchester flourished because of agriculture and transportation. The Ohio and Erie Canal brought passengers, freight, and a means to transport grain to market. The canal also passed through the Ragers' land. John IV married Elizabeth Conkle in Franklin County on April 16, 1835. Not much is known of Elizabeth other than she was a native of Franklin County, (south central) Pennsylvania. Some believe that her name may have originated from the German surname Kunkel. Together, John and Elizabeth had 12 children over the course of 21 years. Just four of these were girls and only one, Mary, lived to adulthood. It is believed that John and Elizabeth took up residence in the home of John's parents shortly after their marriage. Later that same year John's mother, Catherine, died at the age of 55. Little is known of John Rager III after the death of Catherine other than he died in Marion County, Indiana 35 years later at the age of 90 (Present-day Indianapolis and its suburbs make up of most of Marion County). John Rager IV took over the 200-acre farm in Franklin County. His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1857 at the age of 45 leaving John with seven children to raise. John then married Nancy Chandler Rower on December 29, 1859 bringing two children of her own into the fold. John and Nancy had two additional children together. John Rager IV died in Madison Township on February 27, 1885 at the age of 71. Nancy died the following year at the age of 61. John and Nancy were buried in the Union Grove Cemetery in Canal Winchester beside the grave of John's first wife, Elizabeth. The farm was left to the youngest child of John and Nancy, Edson Olds Rager. The property remained in the family until 1942 after the death of Edson. The farmhouse is still standing today and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
