Description	:	John was born to Peter and Katie (Schoffelman) De Boer Sr. John attained the age of 26 years 1 month and 10 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. While serving aboard the U.S.S. Cruiser Memphis, Torpedo man 2/c John R. DeBoer was stricken with pleurisy on August 14, 1943 and was taken to a hospital in Brazil. John had made eight trips across the Atlantic and the long service at sea had caused the lung condition. While serving aboard the U.S.S. Cruiser Memphis, Torpedo man 2/c John R. DeBoer was stricken with pleurisy on August 14, 1943 and was taken to a hospital in Brazil. John had made eight trips across the Atlantic and the long service at sea had caused the lung condition. Mr. DeBoer had entered the Navy in January, 1941 and had been aboard ship much of the time up to his illness. After his discharge from the service on March 15, 1944, John spent some time in a veterans' hospital and lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete DeBoer, north of Lennox. On December 26, 1944, he became suddenly ill and after spending a few days at a Sioux Falls hospital he was admitted to the veterans' hospital at Minneapolis. On January 13, 1945, John R. DeBoer passed away, a victim of pleurisy which he contracted while serving his country. Born December 3, 1918 at Gary, John moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Lennox in 1932. His age was 26 years, one month and nine days at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at the local Presbyterian church on January 16, 1945.
