Description	:	Civil War Veteran and Newspaper Pioneer. John was born to John W. and Jane (Rathburn) Carleton. His mother died when John was only six years old. At age ten, John became a printer's apprentice at Carbonsdale, Lackawanna County, PA. In 1861, John joined Company L of the 83rd New York Infantry. He served at the front until the battle of Gettysburg, where his regiment was held in reserve in a diseased swamp, where John was reported to have contracted the rheumatism from which he suffered for many years until the time of his death. Although the doctors declared John incurable, he did recover enough after a few months to be able to join the 5th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, where he served during the remainder of the war. John worked at publisher houses as well as at newspapers in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Louis, and New Orleans. He worked in the shops of Harpers, Leslies, and Howell. On May 15, 1877, John married Louise W. Wass at Osage, Iowa. In July of 1877, he moved to New Hampton, Iowa, where he took over the "New Hampton Courier." He bought and kept half an interest in the paper until selling it in July of 1883, when he moved to Beresford, Dakota Territory to found that town's first newspaper, "The Beresford News." The first issue appeared on August 30, 1883. John eventually died from his rheumatism. According to his wishes, he had a purely military funeral. He was preceded in death by his son, George.
