Description	:	John Raymond "Ray" Swanson, 88, of Lone Tree, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Lone Tree Health Care Center in Lone Tree. John Raymond Swanson was born on April 12, 1918, in Fremont Township, Johnson County, Iowa, the youngest child of Axel Anton Swanson and Anna Caroline (Johnson) Swanson. Read More	John Raymond "Ray" Swanson, 88, of Lone Tree, died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Lone Tree Health Care Center in Lone Tree. John Raymond Swanson was born on April 12, 1918, in Fremont Township, Johnson County, Iowa, the youngest child of Axel Anton Swanson and Anna Caroline (Johnson) Swanson. Ray attended Palestine Rural School for 8 years, and then graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1936. He started farming in 1939 and on May 21, 1940, married Gertrude Della Eden. Ray was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed (E&R) Church, which later was renamed the United Church of Christ, and then became the Congregational Church. This church and Lone Tree's Methodist Church were later combined to become the United Presbyterian Church. Ray taught Sunday-school class for 16 years at the E&R Church and served for many years on its Consistory, some of that time as president. He served two terms on the Session of the United Presbyterian Church. From 1978 until recently he was president of the Board of Trustees of Swank Church and Cemetery Association. Ray was a school director at Fremont No. 5 country school for four years and a member of the Lone Tree Community School Board of Education for 15 years. He was a Cub Scout Master in Lone Tree for a number of years. He belonged to the Johnson County Farm Bureau and the National Farmers Organization. He also served on the boards of the Lone Tree Health Care Center and Lincoln Mutual Insurance Co. and as secretary of Palestine Telephone Lines Co. He was a member of the R.S.V.P. Club of the Columbus Junction State Bank, the Red Carpet Club of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank of Lone Tree, the Friends Club of Hills Hank & Trust Co., and the Old Settlers Association of River Junction. Ray enjoyed farming, gardening, traveling, and attending his children's and grandchildren's events. In later life he continued to love visiting with friends, reading, watching favorite TV shows and especially, being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Earl, Edward, Elmer, and Harry Swanson, and two sisters, Ellen Swanson and Matilda Brenneman.
