John was born December 1, 1936 in rural Dallas County, Iowa to Ora Ellison "Jack" Rhoten and Mary Catherine Crouse. John was the youngest of Jack and Mary's three children. John grew up on a farm in rural Dallas County near Adel, Iowa. John was born December 1, 1936 in rural Dallas County, Iowa to Ora Ellison "Jack" Rhoten and Mary Catherine Crouse. John was the youngest of Jack and Mary's three children. John grew up on a farm in rural Dallas County near Adel, Iowa. He had very fond memories of his mother and father growing up and always felt time with his own father had been too short due to his untimely death at the age of 59. Stories about his parents and the dairy operation were well remembered and told often. John always spoke fondly about his time growing up going to country school and then to Adel to finish high school. A lifelong farmer in Dallas County, he moved to the Linden area in 1968 to the same farm he lived out his life. A cattleman at heart, but raising all livestock, John always had horses and border collies close by. In addition he owned and ran the Linden Elevator and Audubon Implement. Greeted with a ping pong table, pop and coffee, the elevator was often full of friends and locals. He organized many deer hunts for friends and family of all ages. John served on the school board for many years, valuing community and education. He was known for hard work, persistence and the importance of family. He made time to help raise his family, attend events and even more time taking his family fishing and cutting wood. Later in life he even planned and built several ponds near his home and stocked them to entice more happy visits from his children and grandchildren. He spent a life preparing his children for the world and protecting them when he was called upon. John is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Jarvis) Rhoten of rural Linden. He is survived by the following children from his marriage to Jeanette "Kay" (Atkins) Rhoten: John "Johnny" Rhoten and girlfriend Renee Piper of Linden, IA and grandsons Dallas and Cole Rhoten; Julie "Julia"Nelson and husband Chris of Overland Park, KS and grandchildren Zach and Jordan Marks, Connor and Rylan Nelson; Joan "Joanie" Bond and husband Bill of Earlham, IA and grandchildren Libbie, Cassie and Trey Bond; granddaughter Jailey Simpson of Treynor, IA; Jay Rhoten and wife Sarah of Pella, IA and granddaughters Skye, Sienna and Sibley Rhoten. John is also survived by step-son John Kizilarmut, wife Nicole and grandson Evan of Kansas City, MO. He is also survived by sister Janice (Rhoten) DePue and husband Darrell and family and brother James "Jim" Rhoten and family. Preceding John in death are his parents and daughter Jeanne Renee Simpson. Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren, near Adel, IA. Burial will be in the West Linn Cemetery, rural Linden following a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 14, 2016 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora.
