Description	:	John Richard Crawford was born Nov 12, 1945 in Waterloo, IA, the son of John Wayne and Catherine Hagarty Crawford. The family lived near Waterloo, moved in 1946 to Floyd County and in 1954 moved to the family farm, southwest of Winthrop. Read More	John Richard Crawford was born Nov 12, 1945 in Waterloo, IA, the son of John Wayne and Catherine Hagarty Crawford. The family lived near Waterloo, moved in 1946 to Floyd County and in 1954 moved to the family farm, southwest of Winthrop. John became an Eagle Scout in 1960 and later served as a District Commissioner for the Boy Scouts from 1882 to 1983. John graduated from east Buchanan High School in Winthrop with the class of 1963. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17 and served in Thiland from 1963-64 with the 808th and 561st Army Corp, building the Freedom Road to Kabinburi. Then served with a construction Batallion in Berlin until his honorable discharge in 1966. He then went to the School of Mines in Rapids City and South Dakota in 1966-67. John married Kathryn Whitesell on Aug 26, 1967 at St Nicholas Catholic church in Evansville, IA. They were parents of two daughters, Carmen and Renee. John continued his education at Iowa State Univ in Ames, where he received his degree in Civil Engineering. He became a Land Surveyer in 1975 and joined the society of Land Surveyors in 1976. John founded Crawford Engineering of Independence in 1983 with his brother Dan and continued until his retirement in Jan 2015 John Crawford, 70 of rural Independence entered into his eternal rest at his farm home surrounded by his family on Saturday April 30, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert, parents-in-law and brother-in-law. Survivors include his wife Kathryn, his two daughters, Carmen (Mike) Whitney of Center Point and Renee (Joel) Nelson of Carroll, four grandchildren, Macintyre John Whitney, Lauren Catherine Whitney, Emma Renee Nelson and Cael Crawford Nelson, his ten brothers, Dan, (Ruth), ron (Dianne), Larry (Sarah) all of Independence, Russell of Exira, Pete (Jolene) of Red Oak, Denny (Lila) of Vail, IA, Terry (Connie) of Dennison, Iowa, Mike (Page) and Steve (Audrey) both of Nevada, IA and Dennis (Renny) of Grinnell, five sisters Mary (Mario) Campean of San Antonio, TX, Jane (Bill) Falkers, Genoa, WI, Rose (Jeff) Grover and Margaret (Lyle) Hosch both of Independence and Patricia (Mike) Buscher of Mundelein, IL and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services at 10:30 A.M. May 6, 2016 st St Patrick's Catholic church in Winthrop, Interment at St Mary of Mt Carmel Cemetery, Easle Center, Iowa Visitation on thurs May 5, at the Fawcett Funeral home in Winthrop from 2:30 until 8 P.M. with Rosary at 2:30 PM and on Friday until 10 a.m.. A Memorial fund has been established. Fawcett Funeral Home of Winthrop is assisting the family with arrangements.
