Description	:	Son of Peter Riley and Katherine Morgan. Both of Dublin Ireland John Riley was born in the city of New York where he resided until he was eighteen years of age when he went to Massachusetts to live. Mr. Riley was married in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ellen Donlan. Shortly after his marriage he came to Illinois, locating in West Chicago. Mr. Riley was an enthusiastic patriot and at the Civil war he enlisted in the 12th Illinois cavalry where he served to the end of the war. Mr. Riley was married in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ellen Donlan. Shortly after his marriage he came to Illinois, locating in West Chicago. Mr. Riley was an enthusiastic patriot and at the Civil war he enlisted in the 12th Illinois cavalry where he served to the end of the war. In 1878 Mr. Riley and his family came to Clay county settling in Meadow township and where the oldest son, James, still resides upon the homestead. There were five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Riley, one of whom died in infancy, the other four, James, Frank, Mrs. A.J. Livingston, and Miss Mary, our county superintendent, are all residents of this county. Mrs. Riley passed away several years ago. Mr. Riley was a kind hearted and upright man and was respected by his large number of acquaintances throughout the county. His death occurred Tuesday evening, August 15, 1911, at nine o'clock. The funeral took place from the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.J. Livingston, on north Main street Friday morning, August 18, at 10:00 o'clock and was conducted by the G.A.R. post of Spencer of which he was a member. The services proper were held in the Catholic church at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Father Hunt, and the interment was in Riverside cemetery.
