Read More	Spokane Chronicle (Spokane, Washington) 03 Jul 1919, Thu Page 3 TRAMP MAY KNOW OF HYSLOP KILLING Found Wandering Around in Reardan Section; Held by Sheriff Joe Mitchell, a tramp found wandering about the vicinity of Reardan, where John Hyslon was killed Monday night, was arrested at 1 o'clock this morning at Davenport by Sheriff Reid and Deputies Bradley and Butts. The man is held on a bagrancy charge pending an investigation to discover whether he was implicited in the Hyslop killing. The tramp evidently had been in a fight or had suffered an accident, as he bore marks of a heavy blow under the right eye. There is also a cut across his right cheek. Mitchell said he had come from Idaho, sleeping in abandoned houses along the way. He said he crossed Nine Mile bridge Sunday and slept Sunday night in a deserted house near there. he wandered about this neighborhood during Monday and Tuesday, and went on toward Reardan Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday night he slept in a barn two miles from Reardan. According to Sheriff Reid and Deputy Bradley, the man is slightly demented. He is about 49 years of age and is in very poor physical condition. "I do not believe that the old man is a murderer," said Sheriff Reid this morning, "but it may be that he can throw some light on this Hyslop affair." Mitchell gave the officers quite a chase. People in the Reardan neighborhood telephoned the sheriff's office of the man's presence there at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The officers started immediately to the place in a car, but Mitchell already had gone to Davenport. ∼ The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington) 04 Jul 1919, Fri Page 6 MURDER MYSTERY DEEP SHERIFF TAKES SUSPECT, BUT DEEMS HIM INNOCENT Other Clues Followed - Funeral of John Hyslop Is Largely Attended. While a man said to have been seen near the scene of the murder and whose face was battered was taken into custody yesterday for an investication and other clues were followed officers admitted last night that the death of John Hyalop. the wealthy Reardan Taneh owner, is as much a mystery as ever. The man arrested is Joe Mitchell and he te held at the county jail. The scars on the face of the prisoner appear to be more than a week old and he knows nothing of the murder. Another man who proved to be an escaped lunatic found near the farm was returned to the asylum. A report reached the office of the sheriff last night that the murdered man had left the name of a man who might be the murderer. Deputy Sheriffs Harber and Butts, who hurried to the ranch at the Spokane-Lincoln county time when the paper was found, declared that it had no connection with the murder. Officer Harber was told yesterday that the stock of the gun was covered with blood when the body of Hyslop was found about 300 yards from the house. The gun was under him in such position that there was no blood near it, however. This fact is further proof that someone murdered Hyslop, then put the gun under him, according to officer Harber. "Mitchell tells me that he was in a house near Reardan Sunday night and I will take him out to find if his story is true," said Sheriff Reid. We hope to learn ih he belongs in an asylum." The officers have tried out the rifle of Hyslon and declared it would be impossible for man to inflict a wound on himself such as caused the death of Mr. Hyslop. Hyslop owned quarter Ssction of land just across the Lincoln county line and another quarter section just inside of Spokane county. The farm is about five miles north of the Sunset boulevard. The farm land alone is worth more than $30,000. Mr. Hyslop, who was a bachelor, was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Reardan. A large crowd attended the funeral conducted by the lodge of Reardon and held from the home yesterday. Hyslop had an excellent reputation and the neighbors have been unable to suggest a motive for the murder. ∼ The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington) 12 Jul 1919, Sat Page 2 HYSLOP DEATH UNSOLVED Sheriff's Office Baffled - No Clues Worth Consideration There is every indication that the death of John Hyslop, a wealthy Reardan ranch owner, will remain one of the unsolved murder mysteries of the county. Sheriff George L. Reid admitted yesterday that he has never found a clue, had found no one who could suggest a motive worth serious consideration, and that Joe Mitchell, the man held in jail here, is only a vagrant and will be released when he has served his sentence. Mr. Hyslop, a bachelor with property worth $40,000, was found dead at the farm at the Spokane-Lincoln county line two weeks ago. It was first thought to be an accidental shooting, as Mr. Hyslop was shot with his own gun. The coroner and Sheriff decided that Hyslop was murdered. Two theories of the murder are seriouly considered. One is that Mr. Hyslop was called out by some indicidual who first struck him down then shot him. The theory of the sheriff is that an insane man struck him down and shot him. One insane man was taken shortly after the killing who had escaped from the asylum. Joe Mitchell was also taken into custody.
