Description	:	OBITUARY : JOHN “JACK” ROCKWELL SMITH, 84, of South Valley Drive in Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at his home. Born Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John K. Smith and the late Elsie Mae (Rockwell) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Elizabeth (Mullenix) Smith. He was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School and also graduated from Hagerstown Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War. Born Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John K. Smith and the late Elsie Mae (Rockwell) Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Elizabeth (Mullenix) Smith. He was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School and also graduated from Hagerstown Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Korean War. He was employed by William’s Co. Grocery in Funkstown for 14 years. He later served as the postmaster at the Funkstown Post Office for 27 years and was also employed as a bailiff with Washington County Circuit Court for 11 years. He was a life member of The Church of the Holy Trinity, where he served as an elder. He was a life member of the Funkstown Fire Co., serving as president and chief. He was a member of the Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown. Jack served on the Funkstown Planning and Zoning Commission, Hospice of Washington County and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. He also was a volunteer at The Maryland Theatre and delivered Meals on Wheels. He is survived by his daughters, Annette Snitcher and husband, William, of Linthicum, Md., and Rebecca Davis and husband, Herbie, of Hagerstown; sons, David Smith and fiancee, Lisa, of Hagerstown, Mark Smith and wife, Trudy, of Greencastle, Pa., and Matthew Smith and wife, Christine, of Funkstown; sister, Josephine Stouffer of Arlington, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Williams, Elsie Evans, Mary Flurie, Alice Kercheval and Carrie Sterling; and brothers, Paul Smith and Charles Smith. Services will be Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Trinity, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Don Stevenson officiating. Interment will be at Funkstown Cemetery, Funkstown. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Church of the Holy Trinity, 17805 Oak Ridge Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21740.
