Description	:	John Rush Newman passed away on June 6, 1946 at his home at Ard's Crossroads near Hemingway, SC after an illness of several years. Mr. Newman was born in Strawberry Plains, Knox Co. Tennessee, the son of William Henry Newman and Martha Sterling Newman. He was the widower of Eadimae Huggins Newman who died just three months ago. Read More	John Rush Newman passed away on June 6, 1946 at his home at Ard's Crossroads near Hemingway, SC after an illness of several years. Mr. Newman was born in Strawberry Plains, Knox Co. Tennessee, the son of William Henry Newman and Martha Sterling Newman. He was the widower of Eadimae Huggins Newman who died just three months ago. He and his wife had moved to Hemingway upon his retirement about six years ago. J. R. was an agent with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad for over 25 years and had worked as a railroad telegrapher in Kershaw, Darlington and Hemingway. Prior to coming to South Carolina he had worked as a Custom Miller in Tennessee. He was a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Herman (Martha) Singletary of Lake City and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Floyd (Della) McMillan of Hemingway and Miss Reva Fern Newman of Wichita Falls, Texas. Funeral services were held Friday at 5 p.m. in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery, with the Rev. E. A. Wilkes, pastor of the Hemingway Methodist Church, officiating. Burial in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery was directed by Epps Funeral Home.
