Description	:	Hon. John Ryland Brierly, known by the nickname "The General," was born on July 16, 1839, in Grand Falls, New Hampshire. His father, Rev. Benjamin Brierly, was a Baptist minister who went to California in 1849 and became the pastor of the Baptist church in Sacramento, and later of Baptist churches in San Francisco and Grass Valley, California. John's mother, Mary Jane Harville, was born in Amherst, Mass., and married Rev. Benj. Brierly in 1836. They had three children: Frank A., John Ryland, and Jennie. Mary died of consumption in 1844 and Rev. Brierly married Frances Maria (Conant) Smith, the young widow of Lucius Smith. John first visited to California with his father in 1852 but the educational system in San Francisco being poor at that time, he was sent back East for school. He returned to California in 1856 and lived on his family's ranch in San Jose. He taught school for several years in Santa Clara County before moving to Los Angeles around 1869. He held a variety of public offices during his lifetime, including school superintendent of Santa Clara County and two terms in the State Assembly from Los Angeles. He described himself as a "confirmed bachelor and a crank on public schools." He was also a firefighter in the Los Angeles Fire Department for ten years. He died on Jan. 6, 1890, at the residence of his sister Mrs. G. W. (Jennie) Tarleton on the Milpitas road near San Jose, after becoming ill on Thanksgiving in San Francisco. According to the San Jose Herald, his remains were interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose. Along with his sister Jennie Tarleton, he was survived by his younger brother Dr. Conant Brierly, and a nephew, Ben Brierly of Seattle. John's older brother Frank A. Brierly died at sea on Aug. 8, 1868, at the age of 31, and was buried in San Francisco (San Jose Weekly Mercury, Aug. 20, 1868).
