Webster City Tribune - September 22, 1905 - John S. Thompson, one of the old and respected residents of Hamilton county, died at his home eight miles northeast of this city, in Blairsburg township, Sunday forenoon, of heart trouble, at the age of 73 years. Mr. Thompson had not been feeling well for three or four weeks. He attended the state fair at Des Moines a short time ago and while there was taken seriously ill and suffered excruciating pain in the region of the stomach. He was brought home, and soon recovered sufficiently to be around the house. He was in town Saturday, but was feeling very poorly and remarked while on the road home that he wished be was in bed. Sunday morning he arose after a night of little rest. After breakfast he remarked to his wife that they would take it easy during the day, as both were tired and needed rest. Mrs. Thompson remarked that she would wash the cream separator while he took a nap. He protested and told her to let the hired man do it. She responded that she would take the hot water to the hired man and went to do so. Not finding him she proceeded to wash it herself. While she was thus engaged Mr. Thompson's daughter, Mrs. A.C. Doolittle, called to see her father, and on being informed that he was asleep she looked into the room, and thinking all was well remarked that she would go over to her daughter's and return in a short time. After Mrs. Thompson had finished washing the separator she went into the room where her husband was and thinking that he might sleep too heavily attempted to arouse him. Putting her hand upon his forehead she found his skin cold in death. It is supposed death was caused by heart failure. Deceased had two brothers, Hiram and Chauncy, who died in a similar manner. John S. Thompson was a good man in every sense of the word. For many years he was an active member of the United Brethren church and always lived a conscientious and upright life. His first wife died about eight years ago and a few years later he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Baes of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson resided for several years in this city, going to the old farm in Blairsburg township some months ago to look after the farm while the son, Samuel Thompson, went to California for the benefit of his wife's health. Deceased leaves three children: Samuel Thompson, Hattie, wife of A.C. Doolittle, and Rebekah, wife of Geo. Studley, and two brothers and a sister — Samuel, James W. and Mrs. David Courier. He was an uncle of G.D. Thompson of this city. Deceased was born in the state of New York and lived many years in Pennsylvania, later removing to Illinois. He came to Hamilton county in 1876, locating on his present fine farm home in northeastern Blairsburg township. The funeral will be held this afternoon at Cass Center church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Dr. Buxton.
