He practiced medicine in Huron for many years, starting in 1916 and continuing until 1952. He was born Nov. 15, 1888 in Bridgewater to the Rev. John S. and Suzanne Tschetter. Dr. Tschetter served 15 years as chairman of the Beadle County Democratic arty, was active in Red Cross and Boy Scouts work and past director of the chamber of commerce board and member of Masons, Shrine, Elks, American Legion and Huron Country Club. Tschetter The funeral for Dr. John S. Tschetter who died Thursday morning at St. John Regional Medical Center will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Dreibelbis officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, north of Yale. Pallbearers will be Dr. Emil Hofer, William Churchill, William Griffith, John Wollman, Amos Tschetter and C.H. Peterson. John S. Tschetter was born Nov. 15, 1888 in Bridgewater to the Rev. John M. and Suzanne Tschetter. He attended school in Freeman and Bridgewater and took his academy training and college work at the Freeman Junior College. After teaching country grade schools for several years he entered Valparaiso University of Indiana where he began medical studies. He graduated from the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery in 1916. Dr. Tschetter was a veteran of World War I. He came to Huron in 1918 where he opened an office and practiced with Dr. Sprague. Tschetter founded the Samaritan Hospital in 1920 and owned and operated it for 28 years until the opening of St. John's Hospital. He served as chief of staff at St. John's Dr. Tschetter married Violet Erickson, May 9, 1921 and she preceded him in death. He married Vivian Hook on July 18, 1969. Dr. Tschetter practiced medicine in Huron for 55 years. His personal life encompassed not only a medical career, but successful sorties into government and politics, real estate, agriculture and hospital and nursing home administration. He served 15 years as chairman of the Beadle County Democratic Party, was active in Red Cross and Boy Scouts work and past director of the chamber of commerce board and a member of Masons, Shrine, Elks, American Legion and the Huron Country Club. He owned and operated the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home which he erected in memory of his first wife. Dr. Tschetter served as may of Huron for 11 years and as commissioner for seven years. He was named Man of the Year for his outstanding services to the Huron community and surrounding area in 1961 by the Huron Chamber of Commerce. While Dr. Tschetter was mayor, the city of Huron bought $851,000 worth of WAr Bonds and thus was launched the newest sub-destroyer in the Navy named the USS Huron. Surviving him are his widow, Vivian, Huron; three sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Wollman, Bridgewater, Mrs. Albert (Barbara) Hohm and Elizabeth Tschetter, both of Huron; and two brothers, Dr. Joe Tschetter, White Hall, Wis., and Dr. Paul Tschetter, Huron.
