When one has shared the good fortune and vicissitudes of so many years it is worthy of comment. He was born at Griswold, New London county, Connecticut, in 1825. At 21 he came West, spending 10 years in Iowa, Louisiana and Illinois. In 1856 he came to Kansas and settled on the Delaware, 2 ½ miles southwest of the present town of Fairview, which is still his home. Next April it will be 60 years that Mr. Tyler has spent in this place. We believe that this is an instance without any parallel in Kansas. Where is another settler of '56 residing where he first settled? Around this original quarter section he has acquired four others, which have been the home farm many years. Next June Mr. and Mrs. Tyler will reach their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Tyler was a native of Maine and came to Kansas in 1860 with her father, James Chase, and family. She taught the first school in District 1 at Carson in the same year and for the four succeeding years taught Brown county schools. Hon. James C. Tyler, of Finney county, is the only child living. A daughter, Mrs. G. W. Haflich died last August. Mr. Haflich lives on an adjoining farm and also operates the Tyler place. This pioneer was a public spirited citizen. He was appointed assessor of this county by the Free State Board in '57, carrying his report to Lecompton on horseback; was delegate to nine Republican county conventions; was three times candidate for representative and once for state senator; was twice elected county commissioner; was one of the organizers of District 17 and of the Fairview Town company. He has never missed voting on election day. It was inspiring to see a man of his age journey to Topeka, unaccompanied, to hear President Taft and to witness the laying of the cornerstone of Memorial Hall. Last November he visited Iowa Point again where first he got his mail and bought his groceries. Mr. Tyler is a devout man. Altho living 14 miles from Hiawatha he was one of the organizers of the Baptist church here. Later he helped organize and united with the Sabetha church which was a little closer, and still later was one of the organizers of the Baptist church at Fairview. He has been a consistent and liberal giver to the Baptist church, to home and foreign missions, to Ottawa University and is one of the largest givers to the Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kas. Recently Mr. Tyler fell over a chair and broke three ribs and on the first day of January was lying on his back, but rapidly recovering. This sturdy man can yet see well, hears easily, speaks distinctly and is a charming conversationalist at 90. His many friends wish that his good years may continue to accumulate.—W. P. Tyler, Walnut township's grand old man, died at his home 2½ miles southwest of Fairview at 1:45 Tuesday morning. This was on the farm where Mr. Tyler settled in 1856—61 years ago. His Kansas home had always been on the farm, Mr. Tyler was 92 years old. He was born at Griswold, New London county, Connecticut, in 1825. At 21 years of age he came west, spending 10 years in Iowa, Louisiana and Illinois. In April, 1856, Mr. Tyler settled on the farm southwest of Fairview. There probably is not a settler of 1856 in Kansas that lived on his homestead as long as Mr. Tyler. In June, 1866, Mr. Tyler was married to Miss Harriet C. Chase, who came to Kansas from Maine with her father, James Chase, and family, in 1860. Mrs. Tyler taught the first school at Carson the same year and for four succeeding years taught Brown county schools. Mrs. Tyler and one son, James C. Tyler, of Finney county, survive Mr. Tyler. Mrs. Tyler is a sister of L. E. Chase, of Hiawatha. A daughter, Mrs. G. W. Haflich, died in August, 1915. Mr. Haflich lives adjoining to and operates the Tyler farm. John S. Still later he was one of the organizers of the Baptist church at Fairview. Mr. Tyler was a consistent and liberal giver to the Baptist church, to home and foreign missions, to Ottawa university, and was one of the largest givers to the Baptist Theological Seminary at Kansas City, Kas. Mr. Tyler retained his faculties in a remarkable way and until almost the time of his death he could hear easily, see well, speak distinctly and was a charming conversationalist. Folks all over Brown county will regret to hear of the passing of this grand old pioneer. The funeral of Mr. Tyler will be held at the Baptist church in Fairview Thursday morning, at 10 o'clock.
