Description	:	Sam Hathaway John Samuel "Sam" Hathaway, 86, of rural Ottumwa passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family at 10:45 a.m. Sunday June 3, 2018. He was born April 21, 1932 in Burlington to John Lewman and Irene Elizabeth Bates Hathaway. The family moved to Davenport and then to West Des Moines. Read More	Sam Hathaway John Samuel "Sam" Hathaway, 86, of rural Ottumwa passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family at 10:45 a.m. Sunday June 3, 2018. He was born April 21, 1932 in Burlington to John Lewman and Irene Elizabeth Bates Hathaway. The family moved to Davenport and then to West Des Moines. Sam graduated from Valley West High School in 1950 and attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1955. He served in San Diego, CA with a tour of duty to Japan and Korea, where he served as an electronics technician aboard the USS El Dorado. He married Nora Kathleen Gurr in 1954 and they later divorced. He then married Kathleen Beach in 1965 and they later divorced. Sam worked for General Electric in San Francisco, CA; when he returned to Iowa in 1960, he worked for Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids; Dr. James Van Allen at the University of Iowa; and the Rock Island Arsenal, from 1967 to his retirement in 1997. Sam loved the outdoors, especially fishing. Growing up, the family spent many summers at Nine Mile Lake in northern Minnesota. He spent many happy hours fishing for Walleye in Lake Vermilion, MN with Pastor Giddings. He passed on his love of the outdoors and fishing to his sons. He also loved to cook and watching cooking shows. Surviving are his children Laura Jean Elledge of Oklahoma City, OK, Lee Ann (Bob) Glade of Batavia, Jonathan (Carol) Hathaway of Boone, Sam (Michelle) Hathaway of Des Moines, Michael Hathaway of Des Moines, Gabriel Hathaway of Elkhart, Elizabeth Hathaway of Pleasant Valley; grandchildren, Rebecca, Laurie, Sarah, Hope, Rachel, Coltin, Kiley, Anna, Jessica, Grace and Noah; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Alex, Carly, Allen, Ajia, Anyia, Isaac, Michael, and Faith; a brother, Mike (Dee) Hathaway of Chillicothe, OH and his beloved cat, Tommy. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson, Hunter Jon Hathaway and son-in-law, Slim Elledge. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Friday with the family present one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Institution for Creation Research. Published on June 5, 2018
