Description	:	"John Scannell, 74 years old, who had resided in Montana since 1880, died in this city [Helena] Saturday. He was born in Ireland and came to this country in 1840, when he was 7 years old, first making his home with his parents in Troy, NY, where he learned the trade of carriage builder. Later he settled in Wisconsin and at the outbreak of the civil war was commissioned a captain of volunteers in the Union army by Governor Soloman of that state. He did not, however, see active service, as his regiment was never sent out of the state.... While Mr. Scannell did not come to Montana to make his permanent home until 1880, he had spent some time here in the early days and was present at the meeting held in this city when the then village was named Helena. Father Day, the body of John Scannell, the veteran wagonmaker who died in Helena last Friday night, was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery." obit: The Intermountain Catholic., October 12, 1907, Page 2 John Scannell was the son of Michael John & Catherine Murphy Scannell. He was possibly born in the townland of Cappaclogh, Kilgobban, Kerry, Ireland. John immigrated to the United States abt 1854. His family settled in Beloit, Wisconsin. John later owned a successful wagon company in Monroe, Wisconsin. He married Ann McCormick about 1873. They had five children, Mary, Catherine, Nellie, James and Michael. In April and May of 1883 (within a two week period) all of the children except their oldest daughter, Mary, who was attending boarding school in Wisconsin, died from black diphtheria. Mary Gertrude Scannell later married James Blaine Walker and lived in New York. John and the four children were buried in the Catholic Cemetery on Oakes in Helena, Montana.
