Description	:	John Schoenfelder, age 71, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Sunday December 11, 2016 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 AM, on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Ken Lulf officiating. Burial will in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. Read More	John Schoenfelder, age 71, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Sunday December 11, 2016 at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. Pallbearers are Mel Berger, Mark Tacke, Brad Schoenfelder, Jim Brewer, Dan VanOsdel, and Justin McDonald. John was born June 6, 1945 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Fred and Susan (Blasius) Schoenfelder. He was the youngest of 13 children growing up in Plankinton, South Dakota. John graduated from Plankinton High School in 1963 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps when he was 17. He completed Basic Training in San Diego, CA and fought in the Vietnam War as a helicopter gunner. After his discharge, John returned to the Mitchell area and worked for an engineering firm. On December 20, 1969, he married Karen Block in Yankton. After their marriage, they lived in Yankton and John worked as a draftsman for the City of Yankton. He later earned an Associates Degree in Diesel Mechanics from Southern State College in Springfield, graduating with honors in 1972. He worked for the International Dealership for many years and then at Kolberg-Pioneer until his health deteriorated from Parkinson's. John took great joy in taking care of his granddaughter, McKenzie. In 2010, he became a resident of Majestic Bluffs and spent the last four years at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls. John enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He also loved reading Louis L'Amour westerns. John is survived by his wife, Karen Schoenfelder of Yankton; daughter, Chandra Sanders of Yankton; son, Ryan Schoenfelder of Yankton; granddaughter, McKenzie; one sister, Evelyn Smith of Aberdeen, SD; one brother, Marty Schoenfelder of Plankinton, SD; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; and 10 brothers and sisters. - Wintz & Ray Funeral Home
