Abt. 1706 NOTE: Thomas Schooler was imported to Virginia by John Taliaferro of Rappohannack, Essex Co., Virginia, about June 1701 and took up 590 acres of land in 1728 in St. George Parish in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. [Essex Co. became Spotsylvania Co., in 1721.] He probated his father's will in Caroline Co., Virginia in 1728. Before 1740 he served on Caroline Co., juries. On 19 March 1717 in Essex Co., Virginia Thomas failed to prosecute his accon. of debt against Catherine Mitchell and it was dismissed. The lawsuit between William Woodford and Thomas Schooler was dismissed also. In the will of Peter Bourne recorded in Essex Co., Virginia and probated 15 Nov 1720, Thomas Schooler is named as a witness. No relationship is mentioned, but speculation through the years has been that he was Thomas' father-in-law. On 20 May 1724 in Essex Co. it is ordered that Robert Williams pay Thomas Schooler for 2 days attend. In 1725-29 Thomas was paid for tobacco counting. At a Caroline Co., Virginia court held 12 June 1741, it was ordered that Thomas Schooler be exempted from the payment of Public and County levies on account of his age and infirmities. LAND: On 7-8 Feb 1719-20 Essex Co., Virginia, Thomas witnessed a land sale. Thomas purchased 128 acres of land from Charles Talliaferro for ten pounds sterling in Essex Co., Virginia on 14 October 1726. Witnesses were John Battaile, John Spotsworth, and ____ Harrison. Land was granted to him in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia, 28 September 1728 by George II. DEATH: Will 1746-54 for Thomas Schooler names William and Kesiah as administrators on 10 February 1748. John was named as an heir-in-law. It has been assumed that this Kesiah could be his wife, but it could also be his daughter. ABOUT JOHN SCHOOLER: John Schooler was a planter and business man. In 1736 he was in Caroline Co., Virginia where a John Martin took an action of debt against him. In 1749 he purchased land in Culpepper Co., Birginia. He and his wife lived in St. George Parish in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. In 1772, John Schooler relinquishes right as heir to John Wharton. I am not sure what the relationship might have been, or which John Wharton it refers to. John and his sons, John Jr. and Wharton are listed as slave holders in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia, in 1783. Not a very bright spot in our family history. The "Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families in America" lists John's parents as being Louis Schooler and Bessie Allison. In all of the research that I have done and the records I have checked which were done by many other people, this is the only reference we can find for that particular couple. LAND: John Schooler acknowledged his deed of lease and release to Thomas Schooler, 9 November 1744 in Caroline Co., Virginia, for 55 acres on Wares Creek, St. Mary's Parish, Caroline Co. On 7 March 1753 William Williams and Lucy, his wife of Culpeper Co., sold to John Schooler of Spotsylvania Co., 484 acres in St. George, Spotsylvania Co., on Mattapony River. 2 December 1755, John Schooler and Martha, his wife, of Spotsylvania Co., sold to Richard Tutt, 242 acres in St. George Parish, Spotsylvania Co. part of a tract granted to Thomas Elzey of Stafford Co., by patent, 22 January 1717. On 1 September 1766 John and Martha purchased a parcel of land which was 100 acres and they deeded it to their son Wharton Schooler. 13 January 1770 Joseph Wharton of Orange Co., son of Samuel Wharton of King George Co., Virginia deeded to Wharton Schooler of Spotsylvania Co., 10 pounds currency, Title, interest and right in the est. of his deed, father, Samuel Wharton, etc. Witnesses included John Schooler and Samuel Schooler. On 1 November 1772, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia, Deed Book J 1771-1774. Alexander Spottswood Esqr, to John Schooler, of Spotsylvania Co., planter, lease 87 acres in St. George Parish. John Wharton and his wife Lizzie and Benjamin Schooler. Witnessed by Nathan Hawkins, among others. On 16 March 1775 in Culpepper Co., Virginia John and Martha sold 400 acres of land to William Brooks. Same land granted to John Schooler 17 June 1749. On 2 Dec 1775 Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. John and Martha his wife, of Spotsylvania Co. sold to Richard Tutt part of a land granted to Thomas Elsey of Stafford Co., by patent 22 Jan 1717. (Could this be the father-in-law of Thomas Schooler, who is the brother of our John and who had a son named Elsey Schooler?) In Oct 1779 in Caroline Co., Virginia, John Schooler and Martha his wife were named in a court proceeding as the guardians of the children of her brother Zacheus Wharton, in a case against the estate of William Furlong (Probably their step father) Title Schooler, John.
