Description	:	John Scott Hamilton was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in August, 1824. He was educated at Western University and graduated from Jefferson College, Canonsburg, PA. He studied for two years at the Theological Seminary in Canonsburg (the predecessor to Pittsburgh-Xenia and Pittsburgh Theological Seminaries). Read More	John Scott Hamilton was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in August, 1824. He was educated at Western University and graduated from Jefferson College, Canonsburg, PA. As seen from Iowa in his later life, John Scott Hamilton was a lawyer by profession and became a prominent Democratic politician, at one time representing Allegheny Co. in the State Legislature, and was a prominent person in Pittsburgh. He came to Iowa in 1855 and settled in Ft. Madison, and was quickly recognized for his leadership. Among other things, in 1853 he and his wife were among the 14 original members of the Ft. Madison United Presbyterian Church. In 1855 he was elected as a member of the Iowa State Legislature, and introduced ‘some of the most important measures of that session'. He was accidentally killed while making a speech at a Democratic rally by the premature explosion of a cannon (his daughter noted that it was a celebration of Buchanan's election in 1856). He was a Mason. His wife, Sarah (Miller) Hamilton was also from Pittsburgh and a daughter of John D. Miller, a pioneer of Lee County. They had four children. John Daniel Miller (J.D.M.) Hamilton was the oldest and was only an infant when his parents came to Lee Co. He attended Knox College in Galesburg, then afterward studied law at Washington University in St. Louis (the St. Louis Law School?), from which he graduated in 1875. He was admitted to the bar in March, 1875 and became an associate of Van Valkenburg & Hamilton. He was a Democrat and campaigned actively. He was the City Attorney for Ft. Madison, and a member of the State Legislature in 1878. He was a Presidential Elector in 1880. In March, 1887, he was elected Mayor of Ft. Madison for two years. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and Emporia Lodge. He married Mary M. Rice of Keokuk in 1878 and had one son, Hale Rice Hamilton. The other three children were also mentioned, James M. Hamilton who was practicing law in Oxford, Nebraska, ‘Lizzie, now Mrs. Harrison', was a resident of Fort Madison, and William S. Hamilton was practicing law in Lincoln, Nebraska. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Hamilton [Sara Miller] married Isaiah Hale of Ft. Madison. He was born in Miami Co., OH, and came to Ft. Madison with his parents in 1839 when he was 15. He was a widower, his first wife dying in 1851, with five children. Sara and Isaiah had two children, Sallie Hale and Isaiah Hale. Other names familiar in our family history are mentioned as prominent Iowans of the time: Daniel F. Miller (a brother of Sara Miller's father, John D. Miller) was the mayor of Ft. Madison in 1858; J.C. Atlee (who was a pall-bearer at Wm. Elliot Harrison's funeral), J.H. and J.R. Winterbotham in banking.
