Dec 26, 1928 - Carroll Times - The community was shocked and grieved Monday morning when it bocame known that John Hettiger, well known Carroll man, had died suddenly that morning at 10:30 o'clock while down town. Mr. Hettiger had just reached the downtown district and was walking up Fourth street, when he felt suddenly ill and seated himself on the running board of a car. Assistance was given him by friends who hastened to him and a physician was called. The afflicted man died of an attack of heart trouble before a doctor arrived. The death of this splendid man removes one of the early men of the county and a man whose honesty and nobleness were characteristics which were a part of the make-up of his generous nature. John Sebastian Hettiger was born at Hofenlohr, Germany. April 1, 1841. In 1869 he left his native land and came to America landing at New York. He located in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was married there May 1, 1870, to Miss Frances Gross. Three years later they moved to Carroll, Ia., and since that time his home has been in Carroll county. Mr. Hettiger's first work in Carroll was at the Arts Elevator. The family then located on a farm where they lived for 18 years. Following their life on the farm they spent a year in New York and then located in Dedham. In 1916 they came to Carroll, where they established their home. Two years later, on December 28, 1918, Mrs. Hettiger died and since that time Mr. Hettiger made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kerper. Surviving are the daughter, a brother in Germany, a niece, Mrs. C.A. Barrett of Seattle, who is on her way to attend the funeral and a nephew, John Hettiger, of Seattle. Mr. Hettiger was a life member of the Catholic church and was a member of the Ss. Peter and Paul church of this city. He was also a member of the Holy Name society. Mr. Hettiger was well versed in the affairs of the day and took much delight and interest in all political issues. While he was of advanced age he was not an old man and retained the spirit of youth until the last. Always happy and friendly he was the center of every group and had a kindly word and friendly greeting at all times for those he knew. It is with profound regret that the death of this estimable man is chronicled. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at the SS. Peter and Paul church.
