Description	:	John Sherman Carter Dead John Sherman Carter died at his home in this city Saturday, June 27, 1903, aged 63 years and two months, after a lingering illness which had lasted for many weeks. The funeral services were held at the family residence in South Colfax Sunday afternoon, June 28,1903, at 5 o'clock and were attended by a large gathering of friends and sorrowing relatives. The interment was made in the Colfax cemetery. John Sherman Carter was born in Falmouth, Kentucky, April 27, 1840. At nine years of age he moved with his parents to Memphis, Mo., where on January 17, 1861, he was married to Caroline E. Baker. To them were born four children, three of whom are living, Mrs.Charles Armstrong of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Herbert Warner and Leo Sherman Carter of Colfax. Mr. Carter was for many years deputy marshal of Colfax, a position he tilled with credit. In 1881 Mr. Carter and family came to Colfax where they have since resided. His daily life for so many years among us caused him to be respected and honored by all who knew him. His quiet way and his sincerity made him a marked man among his fellow men and gave him a great influence among them. He was never too busy, or too wearied, even, to be interested in others, or to do them a kind act. In his home life he was a faithful and loving husband, a wise and affectionate father. His splendid character will make him greatly missed in the community, in the circle of his friends, in the brotherhood of fraternities and in the sacred circle of his family. The deceased was an active member of the Masonic fraternity and also of the A. 0. U. W. The burial service at the grave was conducted by the Masons. Rev.
