Description	:	Obituary: John S. Meyer, 74, of Holland, died November 29, 2011. He was born May 12, 1937, in Princeton, Illinois, the second son of Rev. J.T. and Anita Meyer. John attended a one-room country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Mendota High School in Illinois in 1955. He received a B.S degree at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and an M.S. degree in mathematics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Meyer, 74, of Holland, died November 29, 2011. He was born May 12, 1937, in Princeton, Illinois, the second son of Rev. J.T. and Anita Meyer. John attended a one-room country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Mendota High School in Illinois in 1955. He received a B.S degree at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and an M.S. degree in mathematics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He began his academic teaching career at Wartburg College. He married Susan Sampson in 1963 and began his work on a Ph.D. in statistics at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1964. During that process, he returned to Wartburg College for a year and then took a position in the math department at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He earned his Ph.D. in 1972 from Iowa State and continued teaching at Cornell until 1983. John accepted a position at Albion College in Albion, in 1983 and taught there until 1988. He then moved to Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, assuming the Chairmanship of the math department and remained there until his retirement in 2002. Upon retiring he and Susan settled in Holland. John was a traditionalist in his thinking. He approached life with cheerfulness, diligence and kindness for others. He loved teaching and received recognition for the excellence of his work. He earned the respect and affection of his students and professional colleagues alike. John was a good friend. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a man of deep faith and strength of character. Blessed be the memory of John Meyer. John is survived by his wife, Susan; a son, Ted (Jean), of Wilton, Iowa; and daughters, Karen (Marshall) Lohman and Alice (Roy) Ort, of Holland. He was very proud of his two grandsons and four granddaughters. He also is survived by his brother, Otto Meyer (Doris), of Mendota, Illinois; and sisters-in-law, Pat Sampson, Kanawha, Iowa and Norah McCorkle, Omak, Washington, along with several nieces and nephews.
