| Description | : | John Simcox Holmes (1868-1958) was born in Ontario, Canada, and attended the University of North Carolina, 1886-1888, and the Yale School of Forestry, 1903-1905. He was a farmer and forester. In the early 1900's John worked as a Forest Examiner for the US Forest Service. In 1909 he was appointed as the first state employed graduate forester for North Carolina. In 1915 he was appointed the first State Forester and State Forest Warden for the then new NC Forest Service.
