Description	:	The son of Robert Ogden McMurtry and Catherine L. Hager of Green Co., Wisconsin. His mother died, probably in childbirth in 1857 and his father died in 1860, killed by "robbers" and placed in a cave where John Simpson found him. There were 9 children, most still living at home. The younger children were placed with other families; the older married sister took in 3 siblings. John went to Ohio and later Indiana, ending up in South Dakota. Obituary (below) from: Times Enterprise, Wessington, Beadle, South Dakota Friday, November 19, 1917, p1 c1&2 "Another from the ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic was called to his reward when John McMurtry answered the summons of the grim reaper and bade farewell to this earth at an early hour Wednesday morning. He had been in poor health for some time, but was able to be out and around every day until Sunday, though few of the neighbors and friends knew how serious his condition was. Early in the summer he and his wife went to Hot Springs thinking that the climate and baths there might be beneficial, but it did not prove very helpful so they came back to the farm where so many years had been spent. "John McMurtry was born in the state of New Jersey on February 21st, 1840, being in his 78th year at the time of his death. In early life he removed to Indiana, in the vicinity of Remington, where he made his home for a number of years. On February 21st, 1868, he was married to Florence A. Donnelly. Nine children were born to them, the first two dying in early childhood. The seven who survive are three daughters, Mrs. Helen Kelley, Mrs. Grace Kelley and Mrs. Lois Post, and four sons, John, Charles, Corbin and George. "Mr. McMurtry was one of the valiant defenders of his country during the War of The Rebellion, having advanced to the rank of second Lieutenant before the close of that struggle. He was one of the charter members of the John B. Wyman G.A.R. Post, and was always to be found among the boys in blue on Decoration Day or similar occasions. "Early in the spring of 1882 Mr. McMurtry, accompanying quite a colony of Indiana people, came to this new territory, filing on a homestead a few miles west of town where he has since resided. He was interested in political affairs and for several years served this end of his county a commissioner, giving up the office a few years ago when failing health made him desirous of quitting public life. "He was a member of the A.O.U.W. Lodge and that fraternity will have charge of the funeral services which are being held at the family home Thursday afternoon. Interment at the Cemetery west of town."
